Mount Nyiragongo erupted in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mount Nyiragongo is one of several volcanoes near the DRC’s border with Rwanda and Uganda. Its last major eruption, in 2002, killed 250 people and displaced thousands. Nyiragongo and nearby Nyamuragira are together responsible for 40 per cent of Africa’s historical volcanic eruptions. Mount Nyiragongo is located inside Virunga National Park.
