About the Brand Guardianship Index 2024

The Brand Guardianship Index, crafted by Brand Finance, is a prestigious global platform that acknowledges CEOs who effectively and sustainably enhance their business’s value. This achievement requires CEOs to skillfully manage the expectations and needs of various stakeholders, including employees, investors, and the wider community, ensuring a harmonious balance.

The 2024 edition of the survey spotlighted Mukesh Ambani’s exemplary leadership within the ‘Diversified’ conglomerates category. Ambani’s performance was noted for its excellence, surpassing global leaders as well as prominent Indian executives such as N. Chandrasekaran, the Chairman of Tata Sons, who climbed to the 5th position from the 8th in 2023, and Anish Shah of the Mahindra Group, who ranked at number 6.

Brand Finance’s methodology for this index is to create a comprehensive scorecard that evaluates various aspects of a CEO’s capacity to manage their company’s brand and ensure its long-term value. A significant highlight from the survey is the emphasis on Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) factors, which now play a pivotal role in shaping a CEO’s reputation.

The Brand Guardianship Index is dedicated to celebrating CEOs who adeptly navigate the complex terrain of achieving commercial success, fostering long-term brand growth, and managing their personal reputation. Key elements contributing to a CEO’s reputation score include being acknowledged as a ‘sustainability champion’—a factor that accounts for 14% of the variance in reputation scores, surpassing the importance of perceived trustworthiness (12.5%), having a solid strategy and vision, and attaining global recognition.

The index evaluates CEOs based on ‘Perception’ factors that reflect current opinions, ‘Performance’ factors that demonstrate actual outcomes, and ‘Promotion’ factors that enhance future perceptions and results. Mukesh Ambani’s continual ascent in the global rankings is a testament to his dedication to sustainable business practices and his prowess in effective brand stewardship.
