Every year on 5th of April India celebrates the National maritime Day. History of National Maritime Day

The origin of this day trace back to the April 5, 1919 when the historic ship SS Loyalty has sailed from Bombay to London.

This voyage was significant because,

  • It was the first Indian-owned merchant ship to undertake to international journey
  • Was operated by the Scindia Steam Navigation Company Ltd.
  • And it broke the monopoly of the British shipping companies during colonial rule.

This event symbolized the India’s entry into the global maritime trade and showcased the capability in deep-sea navigation.

From 1919 to Official Recognition in 1964

Although the historic voyage occurred in 1919, The Government of India officially declared April 5th as National Maritime Day in 1964.

The shipping industry support the exports and imports, industrial development and also generate employment and help for the country’s economic growth.
