National Safe Motherhood Day 2026: Why Maternal Health Is a National Priority
National Safe Motherhood Day is observed across the India on the 11th of April every year. This day emphasized the importance of the maternal health, safe pregnancy and the quality childbirth care. The day also serves as the reminder that well being of mothers is not just the personal concern but it is the national priority. By increasing the awareness and policy focus steps India continues to strengthen the healthcare system across the India by providing different type of supports.
The theme for 2026 is the ‘Equity in Maternal Healthcare: Leaving No Mother Behind’ which highlights the urgent need to provide the equal healthcare access to all the women regardless of the socio-economic background.

The day observed on April 11 to honor the birth anniversary of Kasturba Gandhi who have played the significant role in social reform and women welfare.
The initiative was also proposed by the White Ribbon Alliance India (WRAI) this organization dedicated to improving the maternal health outcomes.
It also recognizing its importance the Government of India declared this day in the year 2003 and making India as one of the first countries to dedicate the national day to maternal health awareness.

Regular check-ups help in to monitoring blood pressure and fetal growth also to detecting conditions like gestational diabetes or anaemia.
