National Turmeric Board Launched to Elevate India's 'Golden Spice'
On January 14, 2025, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Shri Piyush Goyal, inaugurated the National Turmeric Board in New Delhi, appointing Shri Palle Ganga Reddy as its first Chairperson. The Board’s headquarters is established in Nizamabad, Telangana, a prominent turmeric-producing region.
The Board aims to support turmeric farmers across 20 states, including Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, and Meghalaya. It will promote research and development of new turmeric varieties, enhance value addition for international markets, and raise awareness about turmeric’s health benefits. Special attention will be given to increasing productivity in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, regions with significant potential for turmeric cultivation.
The Board comprises representatives from the Ministries of AYUSH, Pharmaceuticals, Agriculture & Farmers Welfare, and Commerce, along with delegates from leading turmeric-producing states and exporter bodies. This collaborative structure is designed to ensure quality and safety standards in turmeric production and exports, fostering growth in the sector.
India stands as the largest producer, consumer, and exporter of turmeric, accounting for over 70% of global production. In the 2023-24 period, the country cultivated turmeric over 3.05 lakh hectares, yielding 10.74 lakh tonnes. With more than 30 varieties grown, India’s share in world turmeric trade exceeds 62%, exporting 1.62 lakh tonnes valued at $226.5 million during 2023-24.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his approval, stating that the establishment of the National Turmeric Board is a matter of immense joy, particularly for hardworking turmeric farmers across India. He emphasized that it would ensure better opportunities for innovation, global promotion, and value addition in turmeric production, strengthening supply chains to benefit both farmers and consumers.
