Nauru Officially Becomes the Republic of Naoero
The Pacific island nation which previously used the name Nauru has officially made a shift to being called the Republic of Naoero, thus making a huge step in regaining its indigenous identity. President David Adeang stated that now the official name corresponds with the spelling and pronunciation used in the Nauruan language. It is important to note that with the new name, the country will also receive a new international code and a new national identity. This change is part of the global movement of countries bringing back their historical names and promoting their cultural heritage.
The Pacific nation of Nauru is now known as the Republic of Naoero, according to President David Adeang. The name reflects the local pronunciation and spelling of the country in the native language instead of the former anglicized name that has been used for many years.
After extensive consultations, the parliamentary change was approved by the necessary vote, and the government opted not to hold a public referendum.
The government claims that officially the name “Nauru” appeared in the colonial period because it was easier pronounced than the real name of the island “Naoero.”
