NCRB published a report titled Accidental Deaths & Suicides in India 2021

The National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) released a Accidental Deaths & Suicides report, as per the number of suicide-related deaths in India reached an all-time high in 2021. In 2017, 1.64 lakh people committed suicide, a 7.2% rise from 2020, when 1.53 lakh people had done so. Since 1967, the first year for which statistics are available, there have been more suicide-related fatalities than ever before. 11.3 suicides per 100,000 individuals have been reported up to this time, as per the Accidental Deaths & Suicides report.

NCRB Report: Key Points

  • As per the information on accidental fatalities and suicides given by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) in Accidental Deaths & Suicides, this number was around 1.39 lakh in 2019.
  • The suicide rate, or the number of suicide-related deaths per one lakh people, was 12 in 2021.
  • This is the highest rate of suicide-related deaths since 1967, the first year for which statistics is available. Up until this point, 11.3 suicides per 100,000 people have been recorded.
  • The year 2010 had the highest reported suicide rate in the nation up until this point (11.3), as per Accidental Deaths & Suicides report.

NCRB Report: State wise Data

  • 22,207 people committed suicide in Maharashtra in 2021, the state with the highest reported suicide rate, as per Accidental Deaths & Suicides report.
  • Tamil Nadu came in second with 18,925 suicide cases, followed by Madhya Pradesh with 14,965 cases, West Bengal with 13,500, and Karnataka with 13,056.
  • These five states collectively accounted for 50.4% of all suicide deaths in the nation, as per the reports.

NCRB Report: Other factors responsible for Accidental Deaths and Suicides

  • Domestic issues and illnesses were the main contributors to suicide deaths in the nation last year.
  • They represented 33.2% and 18.6% of all suicide cases, respectively.
  • For the second year in a row, daily wage workers continued to make up the largest category of suicide victims.
  • One in four of the 1,64,033 suicides that were reported in 2021 involved daily wage earners, with over 42,000 cases.
  • Daily wage earners continued to account for the biggest proportion of suicide deaths in 2020 (37,666 out of 153,052). The statistic is noteworthy because during the two pandemic years, thousands of people who made a living on a regular basis lost their jobs.
  • As per the research, suicide responsible for the lives of 10,881 people working in agriculture in 2021, including 5,563 farm labourers.
  • Housewives made up almost 14.1% of all suicide victims (23,179 out of 1,64,033) and 51.5% of all female victims (23,179 out of 45,026) in 2021, according to the data in Accidental Deaths & Suicides report.
