Bendapudi’s journey to becoming the first female and person of color to serve as Penn State’s president began in India. She was born in Visakhapatnam and moved to the United States in 1986 to pursue her doctoral studies in marketing at the University of Kansas. Her academic achievements and leadership potential were evident from an early age, and she soon became an academic leader and educator, serving in various administrative roles and teaching marketing.
Bendapudi’s nearly 32-year career in academia and business has been marked by numerous achievements and accolades. She has served as provost and executive vice chancellor at the University of Kansas, dean of the School of Business at the University of Kansas, and founding director of the Initiative for Managing Services at Ohio State University. She has also previously held the position of executive vice president and chief customer officer for Huntington National Bank.
Bendapudi’s innovative leadership at Penn State has been characterized by a customer-centric approach to education. She has implemented several programs and initiatives aimed at enhancing the academic and personal experiences of Penn State’s students. These programs include the “Penn State Go” app, which allows students to access course materials, campus events, and academic resources from their smartphones.
Bendapudi’s leadership has also emphasized diversity and inclusion in higher education. She has implemented programs that provide support and resources to underrepresented students and faculty members, and her focus on diversity and inclusion has earned Penn State recognition as one of the top 30 universities for LGBTQ+ students, according to Campus Pride.
