Lt General Anil Chauhan – New CDS of India: Lt. Gen. Anil Chauhan, a retired general, is appointed as the new Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) by the Center. He will take charge as the CDS of India today. The retired Lt. General will serve as Secretary to the Government of India’s Department of Military Affairs, according to a statement from the ministry of defence. The appointment was made a few months after the nation’s first Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Bipin Rawat, perished in a helicopter accident in the Niligiris area of Tamil Nadu. Lt. Gen Anil Chauhan will be taking charge as the new Chief of Defence Staff today. He will be succeeding Late Gen Bipin Rawat as the CDS of India. It is the first time in the history of Indian Army that a three-star officer has been brought back from retirement to take charge of a four-star rank, that too the Chief of Defence Staff, which is the highest rank an Defence Official can get.

  • Lt Gen Anil Chauhan, was born on May 18th, 1961, joined the 11 Gorkha Rifles of the Indian Army in 1981.
  • A graduate of the Indian Military Academy in Dehradun as well as the National Defense Academy in Khadakwasla.
  • Lt Gen Anil Chauhan held numerous commands, staff positions, important appointments, and more during the course of his 40-year career.

  • As a Major General in the Northern Command, he oversaw an Infantry Division in the Baramulla region.
  • Further as the man in the North East then moved on to command a corps as a Lt. General before taking over as the General Officer Commanding-in-Chief of the Eastern Command two years ago in September 2019. After that, in May 2021, he retired.

  • General Anil Chauhan (Retired) received the prestigious Param Vishisht Seva Medal, together with the Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal, Vishisht Seva Medal, and the Sena Medal, in recognition of his illustrious military service.
  • The 61-year-old Chauhan, a decorated Army officer and expert on China.
  • In 2019, when Indian planes bombed a Jaish-e-Mohammed terrorist training centre deep within Pakistan in retaliation for the Pulwama terror attack, he served as the Army’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO).
  • Lt Gen Chauhan (retd) assumes command as India’s second Chief of Defence Staff, he will attain the rank of four-star General (CDS).
  • He will join the military as a four-star officer for the first time among retiring three-star officers.

  • Retired Lt. General Anil Chauhan has been working as the military adviser in the National Security Council Secretariat under NSA Ajit Doval since he retired as the eastern army commander last year.
