New Gas Discovery in Egypt’s Western Desert
The Western Desert of Egypt has emerged yet again as a key frontier for energy exploration. The Egyptian Ministry of Petroleum and Mineral Resources announced a new natural gas discovery in the Badr‑15 area, located in the Western Desert, tapping the Lower Bahariya reservoir. Production began immediately at an estimated rate of 16 million cubic feet per day (mcf/d), with an expected addition of around 15 billion cubic feet (bcf) to gas reserves.
The field is situated in the Badr‑15 area in Egypt’s Western Desert.
The discovery has already been added to Egypt’s production map, signalling fast tracking from discovery to production.
Egypt has been focusing heavily on boosting domestic production of oil and gas to reduce dependence on imports and strengthen its role as an energy hub. This discovery contributes directly to that objective.
The Western Desert remains a prolific zone for onshore hydrocarbon finds, with under‑explored reservoirs and favourable geology. Discoveries like this show that even mature basins continue to yield significant resources.
Adding 15 bcf of gas reserves means more feedstock for domestic energy firms, power generation, possible export opportunities, and a boost to associated industries. For exam‑aspirants, this links to themes like energy security, resource geopolitics and national development.
