Short History of Air India Limited

  • Air India Limited was first called National Aviation Company of India Limited when it was set up in 2007.
  • It was renamed Air India Limited in 2010.
  • Until 2022, Air India was a government-owned company. It was under the control of the Government of India and the Ministry of Civil Aviation.

The Selling of Air India

In 2021, the Tata Group bought Air India from the Government of India for Rs.180 billion (about US$2.44 billion). Tata Group also took over Rs.153 billion (about US$2.07 billion) of Air India’s debt. The rest of Air India’s debt was transferred elsewhere.

Merges and Changes After Takeover

  • After buying Air India, Tata Group made plans to merge AirAsia India and Vistara with Air India.
  • The Competition Commission of India (CCI) approved this merger in June 2022.
  • After this merger, in 2024, Singapore Airlines got a 25.1% share in Air India Limited.
