Padma Shri Awardee Sukri Bommagowda Passes Away at 88
Renowned folk singer and Padma Shri awardee Sukri Bommagowda, also known as Sukrajji, passed away on February 13, 2025, at the age of 88. She had been undergoing treatment at a hospital in Manipal, Karnataka, before her demise. Sukri Bommagowda was a revered figure in Karnataka’s Halakki Vokkaliga community, known for her efforts in preserving folk traditions through music.
Sukrajji was widely regarded as a “walking encyclopedia” of Halakki folk traditions. She memorized and sang nearly 5,000 folk songs, covering important life events such as marriages, births, and festivals. In the 1980s, All India Radio recorded hundreds of her songs, ensuring that her knowledge was preserved for future generations . She used her songs, speeches, and storytelling to raise awareness about alcohol abuse and its impact on families . Sukrajji’s contributions were nationally recognized when she was awarded the Padma Shri in 2017 for her role in preserving folk music and culture. She also received the Rajyotsava Award and the Nadoja Award from the Karnataka government.
