Paris Olympics 2024: New Features and Changes

The 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, scheduled from July 26 to August 11, are set to be the largest event ever organized in France. This edition, officially known as the XXXIII Olympiad, will showcase an array of new events, format changes, and a strong focus on sustainability and youth engagement.

Scale and Participation

The Paris Olympics will be a grand spectacle, featuring:

  • 35 venues in and around Paris
  • 10,500 athletes from over 200 National Olympic Committees (NOCs) and the IOC Refugee Olympic Team
  • 329 events across 19 days
  • 36 sports, including four new additions

Sport Climbing – Separate bouldering and lead combined events, plus speed event- Increased from 40 to 68 athletes- Speed finals: Aug 7-8, Bouldering/lead combined: Aug 9-10
Skateboarding – Men’s and women’s street and park events- Venue: Place de La Concorde- Finals: July 27-28 and August 6-7
Surfing – Venue: Teahupo’o, Tahiti- Dates: July 27 to August 4
Kayak Cross – Athletes race against each other from a ramp- First direct athlete competition in canoe slalom
Returning Sports 3×3 Basketball – Finals: August 5- U.S. men’s team led by Jimmer Fredette
Dropped Sports Baseball – Absent due to MLB scheduling conflicts and past doping concerns
Softball – Dropped for 2024, will return in 2028
Karate – Omitted due to concerns about entertainment value and audience appeal
Format Changes Artistic Swimming – Inclusion of men- New team acrobatic routine round
Boxing – New women’s weight class- Reduced men’s categories- 7 men’s and 6 women’s weight classes
Sailing – Two new kite events- Modified boat categories- 10 total events
Shooting – Mixed skeet team event replaces mixed team trap event
Track and Field – New marathon race walk mixed relay- Repechage round for 200m to 1500m races
Volleyball – Three pools of four teams instead of two pools of six
Weightlifting – Weight classes reduced from 14 to 10
Environmental Sustainability Venue Strategy – Use of existing venues and temporary structures
Transportation – Promotion of public transportation to reduce emis
