The announcement ceremony unfolded in New Delhi, graced by the virtual presence of Lord Bamford, Chairman of JCB Group. Deepak Shetty, CEO and Managing Director of JCB India Limited, presented the award in person. The award reaffirms Murugan’s position as a literary luminary with a profound impact on both regional and global audiences.
The English translation of ‘Fire Bird’, published by Penguin Random House India, captivated readers and critics alike, contributing to its recognition by the JCB Literary Prize.
The esteemed JCB Literary Prize, a distinguished literary accolade, bestows a cash prize of Rs 25 lakh upon the author, Perumal Murugan, and an additional Rs 10 lakh upon the translator, Janani Kannan.
Prolific Tamil writer Perumal Murugan boasts an impressive literary repertoire, encompassing 12 novels, six collections of short stories, six anthologies of poetry, and numerous non-fiction works. Remarkably, ten of his novels, including ‘Seasons of the Palm,’ ‘Current Show,’ and ‘One Part Woman,’ have been translated into English, solidifying his international acclaim.
The shortlist for the JCB Prize for Literature included exceptional works such as ‘The Secret of More’ by Tejaswini Apte-Rahm (Aleph Book Company), ‘The Nemesis’ by Manoranjan Byapari (Westland Books), ‘Mansur’ by Vikramajit Ram (Pan Macmillan India), and ‘I Named my Sister Silence’ by Manoj Rupda (Westland Books).
