PM Modi Gifts Japanese PM Ramen Bowls, Shawl

During his recent two-day visit to Japan, Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a series of culturally rich and symbolic gifts to his Japanese counterpart Shigeru Ishiba and his spouse. These gifts showcased the deep-rooted connection between Indian craftsmanship and Japanese tradition, reinforcing the civilizational and spiritual bonds shared by the two nations.

Artistic Bowls Reflecting Culinary Diplomacy

The Ramen Bowl Set

At the heart of Modi’s gifting gesture was a set of vintage moonstone bowls, inspired by Japanese donburi and soba dining customs. The set included,

  • One large brown moonstone bowl
  • Four smaller bowls
  • A pair of silver chopsticks

The moonstone, mined in Andhra Pradesh, is known for its glowing adularescence and symbolizes love, balance, and protection in traditional belief systems. The base of the main bowl, crafted from Makrana marble—the same marble used in the Taj Mahal—is inlaid with semi-precious stones using the intricate ‘parchin kari’ technique of Rajasthan.

This gift represents not just a culinary tribute but a fusion of Indian artistry and Japanese tradition, creating a unique example of cultural diplomacy.

Pashmina Shawl: A Gift of Elegance and Warmth

For the Japanese First Lady

  • Prime Minister Modi also gifted a Pashmina shawl to the spouse of the Japanese Prime Minister, elegantly packaged in a hand-painted papier-mâché box.
  • The shawl is made from Changthangi goat wool, sourced from Ladakh, known for being light, warm, and luxurious.
  • It features an ivory base adorned with floral and paisley motifs in soft tones of rust, pink, and red—a hallmark of Kashmiri design.
  • The papier-mâché box, decorated with bird and flower patterns, adds cultural value and represents Kashmir’s renowned decorative arts. Together, the shawl and box highlight India’s textile and handicraft heritage, especially the traditions of the Himalayan and Kashmir regions.

Daruma Doll: A Spiritual Exchange

  • In a symbolic gesture of spiritual connection, Prime Minister Modi was presented with a Daruma doll by Rev Seishi Hirose, Chief Priest of the Shorinzan Daruma-Ji temple in Takasaki, Gunma.
  • The Daruma doll, considered a symbol of luck and perseverance in Japan, traces its origins to Bodhidharma, an Indian monk from Kancheepuram, who introduced Zen Buddhism to Japan over a millennium ago.

This exchange reinforced the historical and spiritual links between the two countries, rooted in shared values and religious traditions.
