Hockey India (HI) has officially announced that retiring goalkeeper PR Sreejesh will be the new head coach for the Indian junior men’s hockey team. This decision follows India’s recent bronze medal victory at the 2024 Olympics.
The announcement was made on August 8, 2024, shortly after India secured a bronze medal by defeating Spain 2-1. Sreejesh’s pivotal saves during the match were crucial to India’s success. His transition from player to coach marks a significant milestone in his career.
Hockey India expressed their excitement on social media, celebrating Sreejesh’s new role. The organization posted on Instagram: “The Legend makes another Legendary move. P R Sreejesh has been appointed as the new head coach of the Jr. Men’s Hockey Team. From playing to coaching, you continue to inspire all the youngsters. Looking forward to your coaching stint!”
Sreejesh had previously announced his retirement, emphasizing his commitment to coaching. He reflected on his extensive experience with various coaches and his role as a communicator and organizer on the field. He expressed a deep passion for coaching and a desire to leverage his vast experience in this new role.
HI Secretary General Bhola Nath Singh confirmed that the decision would be discussed with the Sports Authority of India (SAI) and the Government of India. Sreejesh is expected to officially assume his new position after the celebrations for the bronze medal win.
