Praveer Ranjan Takes Charge as CISF DG

In a major leadership reshuffle among India’s Central Armed Police Forces (CAPFs), two senior IPS officers of the 1993 batch have taken charge of key paramilitary organisations. Praveer Ranjan has been appointed as the Director General (DG) of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF), while Praveen Kumar has been appointed as the Director General of the Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP).

Both officers assumed office on September 30, 2025, following the superannuation of their predecessors.

Praveer Ranjan: New CISF Chief

  • Cadre: AGMUT (Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territories)
  • Previous Role: Special DG, CISF, heading the sensitive Airport Security Division.
  • New Role: Director General, CISF.
  • Predecessor: R.S. Bhatti, who retired after completing his tenure.

The CISF plays a critical role in securing vital national assets, including:

  • Airports, ports, and metro systems.
  • Public Sector Undertakings (PSUs).
  • Nuclear plants and other high-security installations.

With his experience in handling airport security, Mr. Ranjan is expected to further strengthen the CISF’s role in critical infrastructure protection.

Praveen Kumar: New ITBP Chief

  • Cadre: 1993 batch IPS officer.
  • New Role: Director General, ITBP.

The Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) is tasked with:

  • Guarding the India-China border in some of the world’s toughest high-altitude terrains.
  • Conducting mountain warfare training.
  • Assisting in disaster relief and rescue operations in Himalayan regions.

As the new ITBP chief, Mr. Kumar is expected to focus on enhancing border security preparedness and operational capability in challenging frontier regions.

Significance of the Appointments

The appointments of Praveer Ranjan and Praveen Kumar come at a crucial time when India is facing:

  • Increasing security needs at critical installations and transport hubs.
  • The need for heightened vigilance along the Line of Actual Control (LAC) with China.

Their leadership will play a vital role in ensuring national security and public safety through the effective functioning of CISF and ITBP.
