Preeti Sudan, a distinguished retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the 1983 batch from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, has recently been appointed as the Chairman of the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC). Her appointment follows the resignation of Manoj Soni, who stepped down due to personal reasons. This leadership change at UPSC comes amidst ongoing controversies, including allegations involving probationary IAS officer Pooja Khedekar.
Preeti Sudan was born on April 30, 1960. Her early life and formative years laid the foundation for her future achievements in public service and administration.
Sudan pursued her higher education with a focus on Economics and Social Policy and Planning at the London School of Economics. Additionally, she has received specialized training in public finance management from Washington, further enhancing her expertise in managing public resources.
Preeti Sudan’s career spans nearly four decades, during which she has held various pivotal roles in both central and state governments. She served as the Health Secretary of India from October 2017 to July 2020, playing a crucial role in the strategic response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Prior to this, she was Secretary of the Department of Food and Public Distribution and held other significant positions such as Joint Secretary in the Ministry of Defense and roles related to disaster management and tourism.
Sudan was instrumental in the planning and implementation of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana, a major health initiative aimed at providing free health coverage to India’s most vulnerable populations. Her career also includes a stint as a consultant at the World Bank and participation in the Independent Panel for Pandemic Preparedness and Response (IPPR), which reviewed the global response to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Preeti Sudan assumed the role of UPSC Chairman on August 1, 2024, succeeding Manoj Soni. Her extensive experience in public administration and health management positions her as a significant figure in overseeing the UPSC’s operations. Her tenure at UPSC is expected to bring a new perspective to the commission, which is currently dealing with challenges related to the alleged falsification of records by probationary IAS officer Pooja Khedekar.
In addition to her governmental roles, Preeti Sudan has been actively involved in various international and national health initiatives. She has been a member of the Board of the Partnership for Maternal, Newborn & Child Health (PMNCH), contributing to global efforts in improving maternal and child health.
