Prime Minister Narendra Modi Virtually Inaugurates Sela Tunnel

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during the Viksit Bharat Viksit North East programme in Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh on March 09, 2024, virtually dedicated the Sela Tunnel project to the nation. Constructed by the Border Roads Organisation (BRO) at an altitude of 13,000 feet, the tunnel is situated on the road from Tezpur, Assam, to Tawang in Arunachal Pradesh’s West Kameng district. The project, valued at Rs 825 crore, aims to provide all-weather connectivity and bolster the Armed Forces’ readiness in the region. Employing the Austrian Tunneling Method, the tunnel meets the highest safety standards.

  • Strategic Asset: The tunnel serves as a strategic asset for the nation, enhancing defense capabilities due to its proximity to the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

  • Connectivity Improvement: It offers all-weather connectivity, ensuring smoother transportation even in adverse weather conditions, thus overcoming previous challenges faced during winter.
  • Transportation Capacity: Designed to accommodate 3,000 automobiles and 2,000 lorries daily, with a maximum speed limit of 80 kmph, the tunnel significantly boosts transportation efficiency.

  • Foundation Stone Laying: Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for the Sela Tunnel on February 9, 2019, marking the commencement of the project.
  • Construction Progress: Despite challenges posed by tough terrain and adverse weather conditions, construction began on April 1, 2019, and the tunnel was completed in under five years, showcasing commendable progress and perseverance.

  • 123 Developmental Projects: Apart from the Sela Tunnel, Prime Minister Modi virtually launched 123 significant developmental projects in Itanagar, furthering the region’s progress.
  • Future Endeavors: Additionally, groundwork for 95 additional projects worth Rs 55,600 crore in six northeastern states was laid, underscoring the government’s commitment to holistic development in the region.
