India’s celebrated badminton star and Olympic medallist, PV Sindhu, laid the foundation stone for the PV Sindhu Centre for Badminton and Sports Excellence on November 7, in Chinna Gadili village on the outskirts of Visakhapatnam. This academy is a milestone project aimed at nurturing young talent and elevating Indian badminton to global standards.
Spanning three acres, the facility will serve as a high-performance training centre. Originally, the Andhra Pradesh government, under Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy’s tenure, allocated two acres for the project in June 2021, later increasing the allotment to three acres. Sindhu and her team took substantial time to research global best practices, collaborating with architects to design a world-class facility.
Sindhu acknowledged the crucial support from Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu, Vizag Police Commissioner Dr. Shanka Brata Bagchi, and District Collector MN Harendhira Prasad. The project is also backed by energy solutions company Greenko, with technical support from Sindhu’s long-time coach, Pullela Gopichand. Sindhu emphasized that this initiative is more than a training facility; it’s a call to action to push Indian badminton forward and overcome challenges.
Sindhu aims for the centre to foster talent across various sports. “This is not just a facility; it’s a responsibility and an investment in the future of Indian badminton,” she said. The academy, expected to complete within 15 months, will integrate advanced technologies like drift control, crucial for training athletes for international competitions.
