Rajesh Kumar Singh Takes Charge as New Defence Secretary in South Block

Rajesh Kumar Singh, a distinguished 1989-batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Kerala cadre, officially took charge as the Defence Secretary at South Block, New Delhi. Mr. Singh succeeds Giridhar Aramane, the 1988-batch IAS officer from the Andhra Pradesh cadre, who retired from his service on October 31, 2024, after serving a notable two-year term in this crucial role.

In a gesture of respect and solemn tribute, Mr. Rajesh Kumar Singh began his tenure as Defence Secretary by laying a wreath and paying homage to India’s fallen heroes at the National War Memorial in New Delhi. Mr. Singh, recognized for his administrative acumen and dedication, had previously assumed the role of Officer on Special Duty (OSD) as the Defence Secretary-designate on August 20, 2024. His extensive experience in key government roles and his history of strategic decision-making prepared him to take on one of the most prestigious positions within the Indian government. His journey to this role reflects a career built on service, leadership, and integrity.

Prior Roles and Contributions

Before his designation as Defence Secretary, Mr. Singh held several significant portfolios. Notably, he served as Secretary of the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry. His tenure at DPIIT began on April 24, 2023, and concluded on August 20, 2024, marking a period of notable achievements. As Secretary, DPIIT, he was instrumental in fostering industrial growth, enhancing investment opportunities, and driving policy reforms to make India a competitive player in global markets.

Prior to DPIIT, Mr. Singh served as Secretary of the Department of Animal Husbandry & Dairying within the Ministry of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry & Dairying. In this capacity, he played a critical role in improving the sector’s productivity, supporting rural livelihoods, and strengthening India’s animal husbandry and dairy industries.
