The Chief Minister of Rajasthan Ashok Gehlot announced that the state government is going to introduce the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award to state sportspeople. He also said that the Rajiv Gandhi Rural Olympics will be held on 29th August 2022.

The Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award is the highest in sports given in India. The ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports presents the Khel Ratna award. This is awarded annually and it is named after the former Prime minister of India, Mr. Rajiv Gandhi, who served the nation from 1984 to 1989. The award consists of a medallion, a certificate, and a cash prize of Rs. 25 lakh. The ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports selects the winner of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award by a criterion that includes the spectacular and most exceptional performance in the sphere of sports during four years, at international levels. In the year 1991-to 1992, Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award was introduced. Rajiv Gandhi had a great contribution to sports as he was a member of the Asian Games organizing committee in 1982.

Selection process for Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award

The nomination for the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award is chosen from various sports backgrounds. For verification of claimed accomplishments and doping clearance, nominees are sent to SAI and the National Doping Agency. The nominees are also verified by a committee. This committee consists of the Joint Secretary and Director/Deputy Secretary of the department of sports, the Secretary, and the Executive Director of SAI. All the nominees are presented to the Government selection committee. This committee includes 12 members with a chairperson who is nominated by the Ministry. The 12 members of the government selection committee are four Olympians or recipients of the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award or Arjun Award, three sports journalists/experts, one sportsperson/expert, one sports administrator, and the director-general of SAI, and the Joint Secretary of the Department of sports. In 2021, the Rajiv Gandhi Khel Ratna Award winners were the following sportsperson.
