Digital payments have become an important part of everyday life in India. From shopping to bill payments, many people now prefer online transactions because they are quick and convenient. However, as digital payments grow, it is also important for people to understand how to use them safely. To promote safe usage and increase awareness, the Reserve Bank of India has launched a special awareness program focused on digital payments.
The Reserve Bank of India has started a pilot initiative called “Awareness Program on Digital Payments.” The main goal of this program is to encourage people across the country to adopt digital payments safely and confidently.
Through this initiative, the central bank wants to educate users about secure online transactions, common fraud risks, and ways to protect themselves while making digital payments.
The first phase of the program will be conducted in the state of Maharashtra. The project will run as a pilot to test the effectiveness of the awareness campaign before it is expanded to other parts of the country.
This initiative is being carried out in partnership with CSC e-Governance Services India Ltd, an organization that works to deliver digital services to citizens, especially in rural areas.
The awareness program has been launched during the sixth edition of Digital Payments Awareness Week, which is being observed from March 9 to March 13, 2026.
This week-long campaign aims to spread knowledge about digital payment systems and encourage people to use them responsibly and securely.
One of the main objectives of the program is to reach people living in rural and semi-urban regions. The RBI plans to conduct in-person awareness sessions for around 10 lakh participants.
These sessions will be organized and delivered by Village Level Entrepreneurs (VLEs), who are part of the Common Service Centre network and work closely with local communities.
During the launch, Sanjay Malhotra, Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, stressed the importance of maintaining trust in digital payment systems.
He noted that customer awareness and safety are essential for the continued growth of digital payments in India. He also encouraged banks, payment companies, and other stakeholders to work together to strengthen public confidence in online transactions.
Along with the awareness program, the RBI also introduced a multimedia campaign titled “Thoda Dhyan Se.”
This campaign aims to remind users to stay careful and alert while making online payments. It focuses on educating people about avoiding scams, protecting personal information, and verifying payment details before completing transactions.
After launching the initiative, the RBI Governor also held discussions with Managing Directors and Chief Executive Officers of selected Payment Systems Operators (PSOs).
These discussions focused on improving digital payment safety, expanding awareness programs, and strengthening the digital payments ecosystem in India.
