Reliance, Rolls-Royce to Partner on India’s Fighter Jet Engine

India’s push to develop an indigenous aero-engine ecosystem for its next generation fighter jets has been given a significant push as Reliance Industries has decided to form a partnership with Rolls-Royce from the UK to manufacture engines for India’s Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) programme. The initiative will be helpful in India’s bid to reduce its reliance on foreign-made defence equipment and build up its own aerospace manufacturing industry. The AMCA is designed as a twin-engine stealth fighter that is expected to form an important part of India’s air-combat capability in the future.

What Is the Reliance-Rolls-Royce Collaboration?

As per Reliance Industries, the company will collaborate with Rolls-Royce to explore the establishment of a dedicated aerospace gas turbine complex in India.

The facility will help in the joint development and manufacturing of aero-engines, which will merge Rolls-Royce’s experience in advanced propulsion with the manufacturing, technology and execution skills of Reliance.

Anant Ambani, the Executive Director at Reliance Industries, has said that the aim of the initiative will be to help in creating an indigenous aero-engine ecosystem in India.

AMCA Programme Definition

The Advanced Medium Combat Aircraft (AMCA) is the name of the twin-engine stealth fighter aircraft programme of India.

In 2025, the execution plan of the AMCA programme got the green light in India, which means that there will be more opportunities for domestic companies to be involved in the design process of this aircraft.

According to the Reuters report, the prototype of this plane will come out in 2028, with this aircraft having an important place in India’s future air-combat strategy.

Why Is It Important to Develop an Indigenous Fighter Engine?

The creation of a modern fighter aircraft is just a part of the problem. The engine is considered to be one of the most difficult parts of any combat aircraft from the technological point of view.

India traditionally relied on foreign companies for their military aircraft engines. Thus, the development of domestic production might be helpful to decrease India’s dependence on other countries and to have better control over everything connected to the aircraft.

The cooperation between Reliance and Rolls-Royce can contribute to the implementation of this strategy of India.

Competition from Safran Threatens Rolls-Royce

A potential downside of the proposed alliance is that it may put Rolls-Royce into competition with French company Safran.

The French firm is planning an independent venture with India’s Gas Turbine Research Establishment (GTRE), a state entity, to build a more powerful engine for further variants of the AMCA.

The existence of two different international alliances may provide India with some alternatives as it searches for advanced propulsion systems for future fighters.

Fighter Engine Development in India

The experience of fighter production in India shows that it is important to have reliable sources of engines.

The Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) produces 4.5 generation Tejas fighter aircraft, but the delivery of their General Electric engines has been delayed due to some supply chain issues.

Thus, the development of the proposed Reliance-Rolls-Royce partnership comes against the background of India’s efforts to increase its defense industry capacity.
