Renowned Sculptor Latika Katt Passes Away at 76

Latika Katt, one of India’s most prolific and celebrated sculptors, passed away at the age of 76. Known for her larger-than-life sculptures and busts of public figures, Katt’s work captured the essence of nature in its most organic forms. Over her five-decade-long career, she worked with a variety of mediums, including terracottapapier-mâchéstone, and bronze, earning numerous national and international awards for her contributions to art.

A Lifelong Passion for Sculpture

Katt’s journey as a sculptor began during her second year of fine arts at Banaras Hindu University (BHU). While painting felt too simplistic, she found her true calling in the tactile engagement of clay and wood. She once described how the rough texture of tree bark passing through her hands ignited her passion for sculpture. For Katt, the act of poking, scraping, kneading, and chipping the medium was not just an artistic process but a physical and emotional engagement that made her body an integral part of the creation.

Academic and Artistic Foundations

Katt’s formal education in sculpture began at MS University, Baroda, where she completed her master’s degree. She further honed her craft through a research scholarship at the prestigious Slade School of Art, London. These experiences provided her with the technical skills and artistic vision that would define her career. Her exploration of materials was deeply influenced by her late husband and mentor, Balbir Singh Katt, who encouraged her to experiment with unconventional mediums, from cow dung on Varanasi ghats to tree trunks at MSU.

Masterpieces in Bronze and Beyond

Katt’s sculptures are celebrated for their larger-than-life scale and intricate detailing. One of her most iconic works is the 20-foot bronze sculpture of Jawaharlal Nehru at Jawahar Bhawan in Delhi. The sculpture depicts Nehru releasing pigeons into the sky, a testament to Katt’s meticulous attention to detail and her ability to capture the essence of her subjects. Before creating public sculptures, Katt would conduct thorough site visits, studying wind directions and mapping perspectives, sometimes even 16 feet below ground, to ensure her work harmonized with its surroundings.

Award-Winning Works

Katt’s bronze sculpture, ‘Makarsankranti Nahan at Dashaswamedh Ghat’, won the Beijing Art Biennale Award in 2010. This piece beautifully captures the everydayness of life through its depiction of figures engaged in routine activities. Another notable work, ‘Banana Tree’, features bronze fruits curving like thick fingers clinging together, showcasing her ability to infuse life into inanimate objects.

Portraits of Legends

Katt’s Rodin-esque busts of prominent figures, including Ramkinkar BaijSomnath HoreMulk Raj AnandMahatma Gandhi, and Jawaharlal Nehru, are among her most revered works. Each portrait tells a story, reflecting the personality and legacy of its subject. In a public lecture at the Lalit Kala Akademi Chandigarh in 2013, Katt shared an anecdote about creating a bust of Ramkinkar Baij, often regarded as the father of modern Indian sculpture. Initially skeptical of her ability to capture his essence, Baij was eventually delighted by the layered, rugged treatment she gave to his face, a process that unfolded over conversations accompanied by Rabindra Sangeet and drinks.

A Life Dedicated to Art and Nature

Katt’s work was not limited to human figures; she also found immense joy in studying and replicating the organic forms of nature. Her fascination with the teamwork of termites and bees and her ability to translate these natural phenomena into art set her apart as a sculptor who saw beauty in the intricacies of life. Her sculptures often blurred the line between art and nature, creating a dialogue between the two.
