In India, every vehicle is given a registration number that includes an RTO (Regional Transport Office) code. This code shows the state or union territory where the vehicle is registered. Each state and UT has its own special code, making it easier to identify, track, and manage vehicles across the country. Here is a list of RTO codes for all Indian states and union territories.

Indian States and Union Territories

India has 28 states and Union Territories. Each state and union territory has its own government, laws and culture. The states are large regions with a significant population, while union territories are smaller areas governed directly by the central government. These states and union territories play an important role in India’s political, cultural and economic life.

An Overview of RTO

The Regional Transport Office (RTO), also known as the District Transport Office (DTO) or Regional Transport Authority (RTA), is run by the state governments of India. It works under the Motor vehicles Act, 1988, to ensure the law is followed. The RTO manages driver and vehicle records for the state and is part of the Transport Department of the state government.

Purpose of RTO Code

The purpose of RTO code is to identify where a vehicle is registered. It is part of the vehicle’s registration number on the number plate, showing its origin. RTO codes help manage vehicle records, driving licenses, and insurance. They also aid in traffic management, ensuring rule compliance, and simplify vehicle ownership and operations for smooth transport services.
