Madhya Pradesh is currently the largest beneficiary of the scheme with 3.42 million houses constructed in the state, followed by Uttar Pradesh with 3.21 million and Jharkhand with 1.52 million. The government intends to bring forward the deadline for fulfilling the target under the ‘housing for all’ initiative in rural India by three months to December 2023.
The Central government has approved the construction of 28.6 million houses, out of which 23.8 million have been constructed across various states and Union territories. In most states, the Centre bears 60% of the construction cost under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (Gramin), while the state governments cover the remaining costs. However, for hilly and north-eastern states, the Centre’s contribution increases to 90%, and for Union territories, it rises to 100%.
