The global tension around the Strait of Hormuz increased on Tuesday after Russia and China blocked a United Nations plan to reopen this important sea route, raising fresh concerns about oil supply and security.
A resolution was presented at the United Nations Security Council by Bahrain. The aim was to ensure safe movement of ships through the Strait of Hormuz, which is one of the busiest oil routes in the world.
The proposal received support from 11 countries. However, Russia and China used their veto power to stop it. Meanwhile, Pakistan and Colombia chose not to vote.
The Strait of Hormuz is a narrow waterway through which nearly one-fifth of the world’s oil passes. Many Gulf countries on this route to export oil and gas.
If this route is blocked or unsafe, it can affect global oil prices and supply, which can impact economies worldwide.
The proposal went through several changes before being presented. Earlier, it included strong wording that could allow military action, but later it was softened.
In its final form, the resolution:
Russia and China did not agree with the resolution. They said that the focus should be on stopping the conflict completely instead of only securing shipping routes.
They also blamed the United States and Israel for increasing tensions in the region.
The situation has become more serious as Iran continues its blockade of the strait. This has worried many countries, especially those that depend on oil exports.
Bahrain, which strongly supported the resolution, warned that not taking action could harm global trade and security.
The crisis has also seen strong reactions from former US President Donald Trump. He warned Iran to reopen the strait or face major military action.
His statements have further increased tensions and fears of a larger conflict in the region.
