SAI and IIT Delhi Join Forces to Boost Sports Innovation

Marking a strategic leap for sports science and innovation in India, the Sports Authority of India’s National Centre of Sports Science Research (SAI-NCSSR) has entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi. The initiative aims to integrate cutting-edge science and indigenous innovation into sports performance, in alignment with the government’s Atmanirbhar Bharat and Garv se Swadeshi visions.

Strengthening Sports Through Science and Technology

The MoU, signed on September 9, 2025, was overseen by Union Sports Minister Dr. Mansukh Mandaviya, who highlighted that the collaboration symbolizes the government’s focus on making Indian athletes globally competitive through scientific support. The initiative prioritizes the development of indigenous sports equipment, reducing dependency on imports and encouraging Swadeshi solutions.

Core Objectives of the MoU

  • Facilitate research in sports science and engineering
  • Support athlete performance enhancement through innovation
  • Share expertise between academic and sports institutions
  • Aid in injury prevention and rehabilitation strategies
  • Promote inclusive support for para-athletes

Inauguration of the Biomechanics Laboratory

Coinciding with the MoU, a state-of-the-art Biomechanics Laboratory was inaugurated at IIT Delhi. This facility is designed to,

  • Conduct high-precision assessments of athlete movement
  • Generate data for performance optimization and injury mitigation
  • Support both able-bodied and para athletes
  • Serve as a hub for sports science research and training

This lab signifies a major step in strengthening India’s sports infrastructure and scientific capabilities, and it is expected to provide real-time insights into athlete biomechanics, helping coaches and sports scientists tailor training regimens effectively.
