SAMEER Transfers Microwave Sugar Measurement Tech to Private Firms

The Society for Applied Microwave Electronics Engineering & Research (SAMEER), an R&D institute under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY), has signed a Transfer of Technology (ToT) agreement with Toshniwal Hyvac Pvt. Ltd. and Sir Automation Industries. This agreement will facilitate the large-scale manufacturing of a state-of-the-art Microwave-Based Brix Measurement System, designed to measure sugar concentration (Brix) in real-time during sugar production.

Technology Overview

The Microwave-Based Brix Measurement System, developed by SAMEER, offers a rapid, non-destructive, and precise method for measuring sugar content. It eliminates the need for manual sampling, thus reducing production time and improving efficiency in sugar mills. This technology aligns with the PM’s vision of “Jai Jawan, Jai Kisan, Jai Vigyan, Jai Anusandhan” by supporting indigenous technological advancements for the sugar industry in India.

Key Highlights

Technology Transfer: The agreement with Toshniwal Hyvac Pvt. Ltd. and Sir Automation Industries will enable widespread production of the Microwave-Based Brix Measurement System.

Efficiency Improvements: The system enhances accuracy in sugar concentration measurement and streamlines the sugar production process.

Application Potential: Beyond the sugar industry, this technology has potential applications in dairy, brewery, fruit juices, and confectionery sectors.

Remarks from Dignitaries

Secretary, MeitY: Shri S. Krishnan emphasized that the technology developed by SAMEER aids sugarcane farmers by providing a more efficient and accurate method of producing sugar cane syrup. He highlighted that the project’s cost of Rs 83 lakh was achieved within 24 months and expressed the goal of widespread industry adoption and commercialization.

Director General, SAMEER: Dr. P. Hanumantha Rao described the technology transfer as a significant milestone, contributing to the “Make in India” initiative and improving production efficiency and accuracy in the sugar industry.

Testing and Validation

The Brix measurement technology underwent testing at Shri Sant Tukaram Sugar Factory in Pune and was validated by the Vasant Dada Sugar Institute, ensuring its effectiveness and reliability.

About SAMEER

SAMEER is a premier R&D institution specializing in microwave electronics and electromagnetic technology. Under MeitY’s administrative control, SAMEER focuses on the research, development, and commercialization of advanced technologies to enhance various sectors, including agriculture and food processing.
