Sarada Hoffman, Kalakshetra Bharatanatyam Guru, Dies at 96

Sarada Hoffman, affectionately known as Chinna Sarada or simply Sarada teacher, passed away on 14 September 2025 in California at the age of 96. Born on 15 June 1929 in the Theosophical Society campus, Adyar (Chennai), she devoted her life to the classical Indian dance form Bharatanatyam and was a pillar of the Kalakshetra Foundation, one of India’s most prestigious dance institutions.

Architect of Kalakshetra’s Bharatanatyam Methodology

Sarada Hoffman played an instrumental role in codifying and refining the Kalakshetra style of Bharatanatyam. Under the guidance of Rukmini Devi Arundale, founder of Kalakshetra, she helped standardise the teaching system, which unified various traditional approaches into a formal curriculum. This standardisation helped shape how Bharatanatyam is taught across the world today.

Her work laid the pedagogical foundation for Bharatanatyam at Kalakshetra, influencing generations of artists. Her approach emphasised clarity of movement, precise expression (abhinaya), and deep spiritual grounding, hallmarks of the Kalakshetra tradition.

Generational Impact and Notable Students

Sarada teacher trained and influenced many who went on to become icons of classical dance. Some of her most renowned disciples include,

  • Yamini Krishnamurthy
  • C.V. Chandrasekhar
  • V.P. Dhananjayan and Shanta Dhananjayan
  • Later alumni such as G. Narendra, Sheejit Krishna, P.T. Narendran, and Shijit Nambiar/Parvathi

Her teachings, passed on through these artists, continue to shape Bharatanatyam stages in India and abroad.

Awards and Recognition

In recognition of her life-long dedication to Indian classical arts, Sarada Hoffman received several prestigious awards,

  • The Sangeet Natak Akademi Award in 1996, one of India’s highest national honours in the arts.
  • She was the first recipient of the ‘Rukmini Devi Medal for Excellence in the Arts’, instituted by the Centre for Contemporary Culture, New Delhi.
  • These honours acknowledge her role not only as a performer but more importantly, as a teacher and guardian of a classical tradition.

Legacy and Relevance Today

  • Her passing marks the end of an era but also reminds us of the importance of archiving traditional knowledge systems in a fast-changing world. As younger generations take up classical dance, the methodologies shaped by Sarada Hoffman serve as a template for structured, disciplined training.
