Sawan 2025 Start and End Date: Puja Rituals, Mantra and Significance

Sawan is a very special and holy month in the Hindu calendar. It is fully dedicated to Lord Shiva, and people across India worship him with great devotion. During this time, many devotees fast, offer prayers, visit temples and perform pujas. Sawan is a time of peace, devotion and blessings. In 2025, the dates of Sawan will be different in different parts of India, depending on the calendar followed.

Sawan 2025 – Date and End Dates

The beginning and end of Sawan change based on the calendar used in different regions:

Purnimanta Calendar (North India)

States like Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Bihar, Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh follow this calendar.

  • Start Date: July 11, 2025
  • End Date: August 9, 2025

Amanta Calendar (Western & Southern India)

States like Maharashtra, Gujarat, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Goa follow this calendar.

  • Start Date: July 25, 2025
  • End Date: August 23, 2025

Significance of Sawan in Hindu Religion

Sawan is very holy and spiritual. It is believed that praying to Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati in this month brings blessings, peace and happiness. According to belief, worshipping Lord Shiva during Sawan helps remove problems and brings success and good health.

Fasting Rules During Sawan

Many people observe fast, especially on Mondays (called Sawan Somwar). There are different ways to fast:

  • Some eat only once a day, usually in the evening.
  • Others eat only fruits, milk and vrat food.
  • People avoid grains, salt, garlic, onions and processed food.
  • Water is often taken only after prayer.
  • Devotees spend time chanting Shiva mantras and going to temples.

Puja Rituals in Sawan Month

Devotees follow a special routine to worship Lord Shiva:

  • Take a holy bath early in the morning.
  • Clean the house and puja area.
  • Place idols or pictures of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati on a wooden board.
  • Light a diya with ghee.
  • Chant Vedic mantras.
  • Offer Panchamrit ( a mix of milk, curd, honey, sugar and ghee) to the Shivling.
  • Pour Ganga water over the Shivling again.
  • Decorate with Bilva leaves, white sweets, flowers, itra (perfume), chandan and akshat (rice).
  • Recite Shiva Chalisa and Shravan Maas Katha.

Powerful Shiva Mantras for Sawan

Devotees chant special mantras to please Lord Shiva. The most popular ones are:

  • Om Namah Shivaya” (This means ”I bow to Lord Shiva and is a simple and powerful chant).
  • ”Om Tryambakam Yajamahe Sugandhim Pushtivardhanam, Urvarukamina Bandhanan Mrityor Mukshiya Maamritat.” (This is the Maha Mrityunjaya Mantra, chanted for good health and freedom from fear).
