Senior Congress leader and former Union Home Minister Shivraj Patil passed away on 12 December 2025 at his hometown Latur, Maharashtra. He was 90 years old. Patil breathed his last at his residence ‘Devghar’ after a brief illness, according to family sources.

Born on 12 October 1935, Shivraj Patil began his public service journey as the municipal council chief of Latur. His early leadership at the local level paved the way for his long and impactful political career.

He was elected as an MLA in the early 1970s, after which he rose to become one of the most influential leaders from Maharashtra. Patil later represented the Latur Lok Sabha constituency seven times, earning strong support from the region.

Shivraj Patil held several important positions in the Indian government:

1. Union Home Minister (2004–2008)

He served during a period marked by several internal security challenges. His tenure is remembered for his composed and measured leadership style.

2. Speaker of the Lok Sabha (1991–1996)

Patil became the 10th Speaker of the Lok Sabha, where he was widely respected for his fairness, discipline, and deep understanding of parliamentary procedures.

3. Governor of Punjab & Administrator of Chandigarh (2010–2015)

In this constitutional role, he focused on governance stability and administrative balance.
