Senior IPS Officer Amrit Mohan Appointed SSB Chief

According Government sources, A Senior Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from Odisha cadre, Amrit Mohan was appointed as the Director General of Sashastra Seema Bal (SSB). 

Who is he?

  • Amrit Mohan an IPS officer from Odisha cadre.
  • Currently, working as Special Director General of Central Reserve Protection Force (CRPF).
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has approved Mr Prasad’s appointment to the post of Director General, SSB for a tenure up to the date of his superannuation on August 31, 2025.

Earlier, Dalit Singh Choudhary an IPS officer was the Director General of SSB.

About SSB

  • A SSB Officer or Sashastra Seema Bal Officer is responsible for guarding India’s borders with Nepal and Bhutan.
  • Originally set up in 1963, the Sashastra Seema Bal mainly deals with preventing cross-border crime and smuggling as well as other anti-national activities within the confines of the country and its territories.

  • The highest-level headquarters of the force is Force Headquarters (FHQ), also called the Directorate-General of SSB, located in the Indian capital of New Delhi.
  • Force Headquarters (FHQ) is commanded by an officer of the rank of Director-General.
  • The Director-General is assisted by the Additional Director-General.
  • Various Directorates including Operations and Intelligence, Personnel and Training, Administration, Provisioning and Communication, Medical, as well as others, function under the DG.
  • Each Directorate is headed by an IG (Inspector General) and assisted by a DIG (Deputy Inspector General) and other officers.

What is Appointments Committee of Cabinet

  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) is a high-level committee within the Government of India responsible for appointing senior officials to key positions in the central government and public sector undertakings.
  • Established in 1950, the ACC is chaired by the Prime Minister of India and includes the Minister of Home Affairs as a member.
  • The committee plays a crucial role in selecting and appointing to various top posts, including the principal Secretary to PM of India, National Security Advisor, Cabinet Secretary, Chief of defense staff, secretaries to GoI, and among others.
