Shreyas Iyer Appointed Punjab Kings Captain Ahead of IPL 2025 Season
Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the captain of Punjab Kings for the upcoming Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season. The announcement was made during a special segment on the reality television show ‘Bigg Boss’, where Iyer appeared alongside teammates Yuzvendra Chahal and Shashank Singh.
In the IPL 2025 Mega Auction held in November 2024, Iyer was acquired by Punjab Kings for a staggering INR 26.75 crore (approximately $3.17 million). This deal makes him the second-highest paid player in IPL history, following Rishabh Pant’s record-breaking INR 27 crore contract with Lucknow Super Giants.
At 30, Iyer brings extensive leadership experience to Punjab Kings. He captained Kolkata Knight Riders to their third IPL title in 2024, defeating Sunrisers Hyderabad in the final. Prior to that, he led Delhi Capitals to their first IPL final in 2020. Under his captaincy, Mumbai won the 2024-25 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, marking their second title in the competition.
Iyer’s appointment reunites him with former coach Ricky Ponting, who is now the head coach of Punjab Kings. The duo previously collaborated at Delhi Capitals, where Ponting guided Iyer to the IPL final in 2020. Ponting expressed confidence in Iyer’s leadership abilities, stating, “Shreyas has a great mind for the game. His proven capabilities as captain will enable the team to deliver.”
Punjab Kings have yet to secure an IPL title, with their best finish being a runner-up position in 2014. With Iyer at the helm and a strong squad, the franchise aims to clinch their maiden IPL championship in the upcoming season.
