In a significant move to boost voter engagement and participation in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections, the Punjab Chief Electoral Officer’s office has announced Indian cricketer Shubman Gill as the new “state icon” for Punjab. This appointment is a strategic effort to connect with the youth and sports enthusiasts, ensuring that the electoral process resonates more deeply across various demographics.
Under the ambitious target of “Is Vaar 70 Paar”, the electoral office aims to surpass a 70 per cent voter turnout in the forthcoming polls. This initiative follows the previous voter turnout of 65.96 per cent during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections across the 13 seats in Punjab. By engaging a figure like Shubman Gill, who holds considerable influence among the younger population, the electoral office is optimistic about achieving and even exceeding this target.
As a state icon, Shubman Gill will be actively involved in various voter awareness campaigns. The Chief Electoral Officer, Sibin C, highlighted the cricketer’s popularity and the potential impact his involvement could have on encouraging voter participation, especially in areas where voter turnout has historically been low. Through targeted awareness campaigns and appeals by Gill, the electoral office aims to motivate and educate voters about the importance of their participation in the democratic process.
The appointment of Shubman Gill is part of a broader strategy to identify and address areas with traditionally low voter engagement. In a recent meeting with deputy commissioners across Punjab, efforts were outlined to pinpoint these areas and deploy targeted campaigns to boost voter turnout. The initiative underscores the electoral office’s commitment to not only increase overall participation but also ensure that every vote is counted and every voice heard.
Shubman Gill is not the only celebrity enlisted to drive voter awareness in Punjab. Following the footsteps of popular Punjabi singer Tarsem Jassar, who was previously selected as a ‘state icon’, Gill’s involvement signifies the electoral office’s innovative approach to leveraging popular figures for greater electoral engagement. These collaborations are aimed at inspiring first-time voters and appealing to citizens across all age groups to exercise their franchise diligently.
