SIPRI Report 2026: India Widens Nuclear Lead Over Pakistan with 190 Warheads
As per the SIPRI Yearbook 2026 India has expanded the its nuclear arsenal to an estimated 190 warheads and it strengthens the lead over the Pakistan which now possess the 170 around warheads. Alongside with the increasing investments in long-range missile systems and advanced military technologies India has also increased the its defense expenditure.
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (SIPRI) has released its Yearbook 2026 and providing the assessment of the global military spending, nuclear forces, arms transfers and security developments.
According to the report, India has possessed approximately 190 nuclear warheads as of the January 2026 and compared to Pakistan’s estimated 170 warheads. This gives India an advantage of around the 20 warheads over its western neighbor.
This report also notes that the both countries continued to strengthen and modernize their nuclear capabilities throughout 2025.
SIPRI has observed that India’s nuclear planning has gradually shifted towards the developing longer-range weapon systems.
While India’s security calculations remain influenced by the its long-standing rivalry with Pakistan and increasing the attention is being given to strategic challenges posed by the China.
Also the investments in the long-range missile capabilities indicates the broader approach towards the national security and deterrence.
This evolving strategy reflects the changing geopolitical realities and the need to address the multiple security concerns simultaneously.
The SIPRI report also highlights that the military competition in the South Asia is not just longer limited to traditional weapons systems.
The modern warfare technologies are becoming increasingly important in the regional security planning. Most of countries are investing heavily in the advanced systems which is designed to strengthen the deterrence and operational capabilities.
Emerging Technologies Influencing Regional Security
India continued to rank among the world’s leading military spending list in 2025.
According to SIPRI, India’s defence expenditure has reached approximately to the $92.1 billion in 2025 and it representing the increase of 8.9% compared to the previous year.
This spending level also placed the India among the world’s top military powers and reflected its commitment towards strengthening the defense preparedness.
