Sirsa Kinnow Receives GI Tag, Becomes Haryana's First Fruit with Geographical Indication Recognition
Haryana’s Sirsa Kinnow becoming the first fruit from Haryana to obtain the Geographical Indication (GI) status. The GI status has been accorded by the Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai, which recognizes the distinctiveness and quality of Kinnow grown in Sirsa. The GI tag is likely to increase the commercial value of the Kinnow, safeguard its identity from counterfeiting, and create better prospects for farmers in Haryana.
Sirsa Kinnow has now been recognised with the prestigious Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
The GI registration was granted by the Geographical Indications Registry in Chennai to the Kharisuverian Farmer Producer Company, Sirsa.
The application for GI tag was filed on June 16, 2023, and the registration certificate was issued on March 28, 2026.
A Geographical Indication (GI) tag is a form of intellectual property right that indicates products which come from certain geographical area and have special qualities, characteristics and reputation of that geographical origin.
GI tag, according to Geographical Indications of Goods (Registration and Protection) Act, 1999, protects the authentic nature of local products, prevents any unauthorized use of name of the product, safeguards traditional knowledge and heritage, increases brand visibility both nationally and internationally and creates opportunities of income for producers.
Sirsa district is one of the major producers of kinnow fruit in the country.
