Smallest District in Telangana – History

Formed in 1948 following Operation Polo, Hyderabad district emerged from the amalgamation of Atraf-a-Balda District and Baghat District. Baghat, initially a Taluk within Atraf-e-Balda District, attained district status between 1931 and 1934 under the subedar of Medak division. Notably, Hyderabad district experienced boundary adjustments after the formation of Andhra Pradesh in 1956, incorporating territories like Tandur Taluka from Gulbarga district, Parigi Taluka from Mahabubnagar district, and Vikarabad Taluka from Medak District.

In 1978, Hyderabad district underwent a transformation, dividing into Hyderabad Urban District and Hyderabad Rural District. Hyderabad Urban District comprised Charminar, Golkonda, Mushirabad, and Secunderabad Talukas, while Hyderabad Rural District was later renamed as Ranga Reddy District.

Smallest District of Telangana – Administrative Divisions

Hyderabad District encompasses key administrative areas, including the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation, Secunderabad Cantonment, and Osmania University. The district comprises 16 administrative divisions known as mandals or tehsils. These divisions include Amberpet, Asifnagar, Bahadurpura, Bandlaguda, Charminar, Golconda, Himayathnagar, Nampally, Shaikpet, and Saidabad, among others.

In the 2011 census, Hyderabad district recorded a population of 3,943,323, showcasing a diverse religious composition. Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Jains, Sikhs, and Buddhists contribute to the district’s religious landscape, with Hindus forming the majority.
