Jammu and Kashmir is a place known for its natural beauty and green forests. It has many types of trees that grow in its cool climate. Among all the trees, there is one special tree that holds a very important place in the hearts of people there. This tree is loved for its beauty, shade and cultural value. It shows the rich nature of the region.
Jammu and Kashmir, often called J&K, is a region in northern India. It is a union territory and part of the larger Kashmir area. This region has been disputed between India and Pakistan since 1947 and also with China since 1959. Jammu and Kashmir shares borders with Pakistan-controlled areas and other Indian states like Himachal Pradesh, Punjab and Ladakh.
The state tree of Jammu and Kashmir is the Chinar tree (Platanus orientalis). It is a large, beautiful tree with big leaves that change colors in autumn. The Chinar tree is very special in Kashmir and is a symbol of the region. People plant it in gardens and cities, and it is protected by the government as part of their culture and heritage.
The Oriental plane tree naturally grows from Italy, through the Balkans, Turkey and Iran. It can also be found in places like the Iberian Peninsula, Palestine and the Himalayas. Because people have planted it in many areas for a long time, it’s sometimes hard to tell where it originally grew.
This tree usually grows near rivers alongside trees like willow and poplar but can live in dry places once it is strong. Some trees are hundreds of years old and very big, with trunks over 4 meters wide.
The leaves look like maple leaves – they have deep cuts and grow one by one on the branches. The bank often peels off in flakes, and the flowers and fruits grow in small round clusters.
The leaves and bark have been used as medicine. People have made fabric dye from its twigs and roots. The wood, called lacewood, is valuable and used for making indoor furniture. Artists also use its leaves for carving designs.
The plane tree is famous in music and literature. Handel wrote a song about the shade of a plane tree. In Kashmir, the chinar leaf is a symbol used on the government seal and by universities. It is also the state tree of Jammu and Kashmir in India.
