Sunil Barthwal take charges as Secretary in Department of Commerce

Senior IAS officer, Sunil Barthwal assumed charge as the commerce secretary. Barthwal, a 1989-batch officer of the Bihar cadre, previously served as the labour and employment secretary. He replaced Subrahmanyam, a 1987-batch IAS officer of the Chhattisgarh cadre, who was appointed as chairman and managing director, of the India Trade Promotion Organisation on a contract basis for a period of two years following his superannuation.

Education of Sunil Barthwal:

Barthwal did his Economics honours from St Stephen’s College, Delhi and has a post-graduate economics degree from JNU. He has published articles in journals and other publications and has represented India in many international forums.

Experience of Sunil Barthwal:

  • During his rich and varied experience as an IAS Officer, he has held various administrative positions in the areas of Finance, Social Security, Investment, Infrastructure, Mines, Steel, Energy, Transport etc. in the Government at the Central and State levels.
  • He has also worked in the Competition Commission of India. He has been on the Boards of SAIL, NMDC, MECON, MSTC & NIIF. He was the CEO of the Employees’ Provident Fund Organisation, which is the largest social security organisation of India.
  • He has been instrumental in many reforms in EPFO resulting in making it a more efficient, transparent and delivery-oriented organisation. He has published articles in journals and other publications. He has represented India in many international forums.
