Eminent sociologist T.K. Oommen who is regarded as a leading architect of modern Indian sociology was passed away on February 26 2026 at the age of 88. He breathed his last in Gurugram. A Professor Emeritus at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU), Prof. Oommen was widely respected for his scholarship on social justice, pluralism, identity, and social transformation.

  • Chairperson of the Advisory Committee of the Gujarat Harmony Project after the 2002 communal violence

Born on October 16, 1937 in Venmony, Alappuzha (then part of Travancore), T.K. Oommen began his academic journey with a BA in Economics from the University of Kerala in 1957. He later completed his Master’s and PhD in Sociology from Poona University (now Savitribai Phule Pune University).

His academic career included,

  • Teaching at Delhi School of Social Work (1964-1971)
  • Associate Professor at JNU’s Centre for the Study of Social Systems (1971-1976)
  • Professor of Sociology at JNU (1976-2002)
  • Professor Emeritus at JNU from 2007 onwards
  • He authored nearly 20 books and numerous scholarly articles.
