Tamil Nadu Launches Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram Scheme

Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, C. Joseph Vijay, has introduced a scheme named Thaaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam or ‘Maternal Uncle Gold Ring Scheme’ in Madurai on September 28, 2026. Under this scheme, newborns are provided with a 22-carat gold ring of one-gram weight in various hospitals of Tamil Nadu run by the government. This scheme is inspired by the Tamil culture where gifts are offered to the baby by maternal uncle named as Thaaimaman Seer.

Eligibility for Gold Ring Scheme

The scheme applies to babies born in government hospitals in Tamil Nadu from June 22, 2026 onwards. The scheme is thus retroactive from June 22, which is also the Chief Minister’s birthday.

The requirements for the scheme include,

• The child should be born in a government hospital in Tamil Nadu.
• The mother should be a resident of Tamil Nadu.
• The mother should be enrolled in the PICME program.
• The beneficiary should have the requisite RCH ID.
• The eligible child is awarded a gold ring weighing one gram and with 22 carats.

Each gold ring will carry its own unique serial number and will be packed in tamper-proof packing.

Allocation of ₹755.83 Crores Annually

According to government officials, the scheme has an allocation of ₹755.83 crore annually. It aims at supplying around 4.41 lakh 1-gram, 22-carat gold rings annually.

In order to implement the program initially, the government has acquired 1.28 lakh gold rings. These will be supplied to babies born from June 22 till the commencement of the scheme and future babies under the scheme.

Tamil Nadu has around 7.8 lakhs births annually, while 53% of births occur in government hospitals annually. This figure is based on the data from government officials concerning the scheme.

Objective of the Scheme

It is the combination of a welfare scheme and the public health goals of the state. Through the provision of the scheme for delivery in government hospitals, it aims at encouraging institutional deliveries as well as improving the confidence of people in the government hospitals.

It is also a component of the state’s strategy concerning maternal and child health care. The PICME and RCH identification procedures make this scheme link up with pregnancy and child health tracking systems.

Distributing and Identifying

The state has designed measures that will enable it to distribute the rings to children eligible retroactively from June 22, 2026.

In respect to children eligible post-launch, the rings are to be given prior to discharge from the government hospital. The ring’s serial number and tamper-resistant packaging are expected to facilitate this process.
