Top-10 Indian States with the Highest GST Revenue Collection in FY 2024-25

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a major tax collected by the Indian government on the sale of goods and services. Each state in India collects GST based on its trade, industries and people’s spending. In the financial year 2024, some states collected more GST than others due to strong business activity. Let’s look at the top 10 states in India by GST revenue.

GST and Its Significance

GST (Goods and Services Tax) started in India on July 1, 2017. It replaced many old taxes and made the tax system simple. It helps both the central and state government collect money from businesses and consumers in a clean and clear way.

In 2024, India collected Rs.21.36 lakh crore through GST – the highest ever.

In April 2025, GST collected grew by 12.6%, touching Rs.2,36,176 crore.

Indian States with Highest GST Collection in FY 2024

Maharashtra is still the number one state in GST collection for the year 2024 and also in April 2025. But the growth in GST collections has become slower. In April 2024. the growth was 13%,but in April 2025, it dropped to 11%. Even with slower growth, Maharashtra remains the leader because of its strong economy and big cities like Mumbai.

Gujarat performed better than many big states in GST collections. In April 2025, it collected Rs.14,970 crore in GST, which is its highest ever. This shows a 13% increase compared to last year. For the full financial year 2024-25, Gujarat collected a total of Rs.174,938 crore in GST. This strong growth shows that Gujarat’s industries and businesses are doin very well.

Smaller Regions Show Big Jump in GST Growth

As of April 2025, Lakshadweep recorded a huge increase in GST collection with a rise of 287%, which is very impressive. In the northeastern states of India, Arunachal Pradesh showed a strong 66% growth. It was followed by Meghalaya with a 50% rise and Nagaland with a 42% increase. This shows that even small remote regions are improving in tax collections.

Maharashtra stands as the state with the highest GST revenue collection with an impressive GST collection of Rs.3,18,497 crore in FY 2024, followed by Karnataka, Gujarat, Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh.
