What Is Operation Keller in Kashmir?
In the early hours of May 13, 2025, the Indian Army launched a high-intensity counter-terror operation in the dense forests of Keller in Shopian, South Kashmir. Named Operation Keller, the mission was initiated following credible intelligence reports about heavily armed militants hiding in the region.
This operation reflects India’s continued commitment to neutralising terrorist threats within the Valley and ensuring the safety of its citizens.
Operation Keller comes just days after Operation Sindoor, an airstrike carried out by India targeting terrorist launch pads in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Operation Sindoor was launched in retaliation for a brutal terror attack in Pahalgam that claimed 26 lives on April 22.
The back-to-back nature of these operations highlights India’s proactive and multi-pronged approach to counter-terrorism, shifting seamlessly from aerial strikes to ground-based encounters in high-risk zones like Shopian.
Operation Keller was launched based on specific intelligence inputs received by the Rashtriya Rifles, a counter-insurgency unit of the Indian Army. These inputs indicated the movement and presence of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives in the Shoekal Keller area of Shopian district.
The mission was aimed at preventing planned terrorist attacks, neutralising key LeT figures, and disrupting militant networks in the Valley.
The operation took place in the Keller region of Shopian, a well-known militant stronghold in South Kashmir. The area is characterised by dense forests and challenging terrain, often used by militants as a hideout due to its natural cover and proximity to infiltration routes.
The operation specifically targeted Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operatives suspected of orchestrating several violent acts in the region. During the encounter, three high-value militants were eliminated. These individuals were believed to be involved in radicalisation and armed attacks in South Kashmir.
Operation Keller was a joint mission involving:
The seamless coordination between these forces ensured the success of the operation with minimal collateral damage.
While the primary encounter ended with the elimination of the terrorists, follow-up operations are still underway. Security personnel are sanitising the area, searching for hidden weapon caches, and ensuring that no militants remain at large. The identification of the slain terrorists is also in progress.
Authorities have urged local residents to stay vigilant and cooperate with the forces as the area remains under surveillance.
The mission also sent a strong message to terror outfits operating in the Valley that Indian security forces remain on high alert and ready to respond decisively.
With Operation Sindoor and Operation Keller executed in quick succession, it’s clear that India is ramping up its counter-terrorism framework. The security apparatus is likely to continue:
