Top 10 Most Polluted Cities in May 2026: Surprising Names on the List

The Air pollution in 2026 has emerged as a growing global concern as the several unexpected cities recording the dangerously high Air Quality Index (AQI). From European coastal towns to the Indian urban centres the pollution patterns are becoming more unpredictable. As day by day AQI levels enter unhealthy and severe zones the impact on daily life and public health is becoming more visible and this raising the questions about the environment.

Global AQI Rankings 2026

The latest global AQI data clearly shows that pollution is no longer confined to large metropolitan regions. The smaller towns and less expected locations are also featuring in the list of the most polluted places in the world. Cities like Cobh, Dungarvan and Clonmel in Ireland have recorded the unusually high AQI levels and Cobh have reached to the severe level of 208. This is surprising as these are typically known for cleaner environments and suggesting that temporary weather conditions may be trapped the pollutants.

Also in Asia cities like Kashgar, Bikaner and Patna has also show unhealthy AQI levels. The spread across the different continents highlights the air pollution is becoming a global issue and it is not just limited to traditional industrial hubs.

Top 10 Most Polluted Cities (May 2026)

  1. Cobh, Ireland – AQI 208 (Severe)
  2. Dungarvan, Ireland – AQI 196 (Unhealthy)
  3. Clonmel, Ireland – AQI 192 (Unhealthy)
  4. Kashgar, China – AQI 162 (Unhealthy)
  5. Bikaner, India – AQI 160 (Unhealthy)
  6. Patna, India – AQI 154 (Unhealthy)
  7. Aurangabad, India – AQI 152 (Unhealthy)
  8. Begusarai, India – AQI 150 (Poor)
  9. Abu Dhabi, UAE – AQI 146 (Poor)
  10. Muzaffarpur, India – AQI 136 (Poor)

Why Unexpected Cities Are Experiencing High Pollution?

Technical experts have suggested that one of the main important reasons behind rising the AQI levels in smaller towns is weather stagnation. Where air movement slows down and the pollutants remain trapped close to the ground.

In the coastal towns like Cobh and Dungarvan, reduced wind flow prevents the pollutants from dispersing.

Also even moderate urban activity such as traffic, small-scale industries and the construction can significantly increase the pollution levels when it combines with stagnant air.

These factors have show that pollution hike are not always linked to the large industries but can it is result from a combination of local conditions.

The Pollution Pattern of The Inida

In India several cities including Bikaner, Patna, Aurangabad, Begusarai and Muzaffarpur are experiencing unhealthy to poor AQI levels.

The reasons are vary by region but it commonly include dust from construction, vehicular emissions and industrial activity.

Also in the desert cities like Bikaner, dry winds carry large amounts of dust which increases the particulate matter in the air.

As compare to other cities Bihar face pollution due to rapid urbanization, traffic congestion and the seasonal factors.

Role of Climate and Geography in Pollution Levels

Geographical conditions has also play a major role in the air quality. Cities like Abu Dhabi and Kashgar experience the high AQI levels partly due to desert environments where the dust particles are naturally present in the atmosphere.

Also the weather patterns such as low humidity, temperature inversions and wind changes can significantly influence pollution levels.

These factors can cause the sudden rise in AQI even in those areas which are generally less polluted and making air quality more unpredictable.

Why Rising AQI Is a Serious Concern?

The Air Quality Index is not just the number but it directly reflects the health risks associated with breathing polluted air.

When the AQI levels rise above 150 this air becomes unhealthy for everyone not just for sensitive individuals.

Also people who are exposed to high pollution levels may experience the breathing difficulties, throat irritation, eye discomfort and the fatigue.

The long-term exposure can lead to the serious conditions such as respiratory diseases and heart problems.
