Union Cabinet clears two new semiconductor projects under India Semiconductor Mission
The Union Cabinet led by Honorable Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi has approved the two new semiconductor projects under the India’s Semiconductor Mission (ISM). Upcoming two projects have the combined investment of over ₹3,936 crore and these projects will be set up in the State of Gujarat and it expected to generate more than 2,200 skilled jobs. Through these new projects India has taken another forward step to make India as global semiconductor hub.
The Union Cabinet led by PM Narendra Modi has approved two key semiconductor manufacturing facilities in Gujarat. It marks the significant expansion of the India’s semiconductor ecosystem under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM).
This newly approved projects includes,
These projects will not just boost domestic manufacturing but it also strengthen the India’s position in global electronics supply chains.
One of the most important aspects is the project by Crystal Matrix Limited (CML), which will set to established in Dholera. And this facility will focus on compound semiconductor fabrication using Gallium Nitride (GaN) technology.
This facility will produce Mini/Micro-LED display panels with the annual capacity of 72,000 sq. meters. It also produce GaN epitaxy wafers with a capacity of 24,000 RGB wafer sets every year.
These products have the wide applications in the large displays such as TVs and commercial signages, also in the smartphones, tablets and automotive displays. This part are play important role in emerging technologies like XR (Extended Reality) glasses and smart wearables.
This project will positions the India at the forefront of next-generation display technologies.
The second project will be led by Suchi Semicon Private Limited (SSPL) and it will be located in Surat. It focuses on to setting up an Outsourced Semiconductor Assembly and Test (OSAT) facility.
This unit have the production capacity of the 1,033 million chips per year. And it focus on discrete semiconductors used in the power electronics and analog ICs
These chips will serve the industries such as,
This facility will strengthens India’s backend semiconductor capabilities which are important for a complete chip ecosystem.
After these approvals the total number of projects under the India Semiconductor Mission (ISM) has reached to 12 with the cumulative investments of around ₹1.64 lakh crore.
The government is also supporting the 315 academic institutions with semiconductor design infrastructure.
Also the 104 startups working in the chip design and innovation.
Notably the under this mission two semiconductor projects have already started commercial shipments while two more are expected to begin soon.
