India’s Smart Cities Mission (SCM), launched in 2015, is entering its final stretch with an impressive 93% project completion rate across 100 cities. Despite accounting for just 31% of the population, these cities contribute 63% of India’s GDP, highlighting the rising importance of urban development. 2. Uttar Pradesh — Northern Powerhouse

UP strengthens its urban reform image with 10 Smart Cities including Agra, Lucknow, and Varanasi. It utilised 100% of ₹4,900 crore funding, while Lucknow’s integrated command centre prevents ₹500 crore in annual flood losses — a strong example of climate-resilient planning.

3. Maharashtra — Financial & Innovation Hub

4. Madhya Pradesh — Sustainability Front Runner

With 7 Smart Cities, MP emphasises industrial corridors and green systems. Indore leads the national waste recycling leaderboard with an 80% recovery rate, aligning with circular economy goals.

5. Gujarat — Smart Mobility & PPP Champion

Gujarat’s 6 Smart Cities accelerated progress through ₹5,000 crore PPP partnerships. Surat became the first city to finish 100% projects, reducing traffic congestion by 25% using AI sensors. Even Ahmedabad improved port cargo handling by 20% with intelligent logistics.

6. Rajasthan — Tourism-Driven Innovation

Rajasthan adopted “tourism tech” in Udaipur and Kota, leading to a 15% increase in tourist inflows. Heritage sites were protected using sensor-based monitoring, balancing culture and commerce.
