Madhya Pradesh is a state in the middle of India. Its name means “Central Province.” The capital city is Bhopal, and the biggest city is Indore. Other important cities in Madhya Pradesh include Jabalpur, Gwalior, Ujjain, Dewas, Sagar, Chhindwara, and Rewa. It is the second largest state in India by area and has the fifth largest population, with over 72 million people living there. The state shares borders with Uttar Pradesh to the northeast, Chhattisgarh to the east, Maharashtra to the south, Gujarat to the west, and Rajasthan to the northwest.

The state also has different types of towns: 18 big city councils (Nagar Nigams), 100 town councils (Nagar Palikas), and 264 smaller town councils (Nagar Panchayats).
