U Tirot Sing’s Bust Unveiled In Dhaka, Bangladesh
U Tirot Sing Syiem, a revered freedom fighter from the Khasi community, was commemorated for his indomitable spirit and sacrifice as the Meghalaya government unveiled his life-size bust at the Indira Gandhi Cultural Centre (IGCC) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
Meghalaya’s Deputy Chief Minister, Sniawbhalang Dhar, led a delegation including State Tourism Minister Paul Lyngdoh and government officials in the unveiling ceremony. The event took place at the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) in Dhaka, Bangladesh.
U Tirot Sing Syiem’s legacy is marked by his pivotal role in the fight against colonial oppression. On April 4, 1829, he initiated a daring attack on the British Garrison at Nongkhlaw, signaling a relentless resistance against foreign rule. This act sparked a fierce four-year-long conflict between the resolute Khasi soldiers, led by U Tirot Sing Syiem, and the British forces, ultimately leading to his martyrdom in Dhaka.
